Amazon closes Halo Health division, to layoff staff and offer refunds for hardware devices

If you have been following the telehealth community and the news of big tech companies for a while, then you must be aware that Amazon entered the healthcare industry with the launch of Amazon Halo Health. Now, we are not going to talk much about the Halo Health division from Amazon simply because the company has decided that it is not worth their time and efforts and they have decided to close it down. Also, Amazon has announced that they will lay off the entire staff of its Halo Health division, meaning that it will not enter the healthcare industry in the near future.

In a note to its customers, Amazon announced that it is closing the Halo Health division effective July 31 and the good thing is that Amazon will offer hardware refunds to all the customers who ordered the device in the last 12 months. The company says that “At Amazon, we think big, experiment, and invest in new ideas like Amazon Halo in our efforts to delight customers,”. However, we think that the company shutting off an important division like Health in a very short span of time does not bode well for its customers in the future if it wants to enter the health sector ever again because of how its first foray went.

Amazon, in a statement to TechCrunch, said “We notified impacted employees in the U.S. and Canada today. In other regions, we are following local processes, which may include time for consultation with employee representative bodies and possibly result in longer timelines to communicate with impacted employees. For employees who are impacted by this decision, we are providing packages that include a separation payment, transitional health insurance benefits, and external job placement support”. It is worth noting that the notification to its customers is also thought to be of very short notice. As of the beginning of August, all of the aforementioned products will cease functioning, Amazon adds. In this lineup of products, we have the Amazon Halo View, Halo Band, Halo Rise and a bunch of accessories. We still think that companies like Amazon and Google do need to give more time to phase out its products going forward.
