Every 1 in 5 kids around the world show signs of disordered eating: Study

One of the topics that many people take for granted is the obesity, that is increasing in children who are not even 10 years of age. It is one of those things that a lot of people take pride in saying that their kid is “healthy,” but the reality is that obesity or overweightness is a problem and if not taken care of, it can be a real issue not only for the child but their health going forward. It is also worth noting that people don’t get obese because they like eating and eating as much as possible. There is something called disordered eating, and we will share a research on this topic.

According to this new study, every 1 out of 5 kids worldwide show signs of disordered eating. Now, we will understand what exactly disordered eating refers to as per this study. This study also confirms that this number is even higher in girls, and kids with high body-mass-index, also called BMI. BMI is also the primary metric to categorize someone as underweight, normal, overweight or obese.

This study was carried out by Jennifer Rolin from The Eating Disorder Center in Rockville, Maryland, and she says that “it’s important to note that both disordered eating and eating disorders are serious and deserve treatment and professional help”. She even said, “The prevalence of disordered eating could be even higher if children were asked about binge-eating or muscle-building symptoms and included studies during the pandemic,”

While binge-eating can be tolerated to a certain extent, if someone has symptoms of disordered eating then they can be seen binge-eating at any given time regardless of the time of day. Also, disordered eating symptoms include fasting too much and not eating to maintain the perfect body shape. If someone uses pills to lose weight then that can also be seen as a sign of disordered eating.

Rollin said, “Eating disorders and disordered eating can both take away and limit someone’s quality of life as they fill your brain with thoughts about food and your body. Freedom is possible, and you deserve to live a full life — not one that is consumed with food, exercise and weight.”
