Telehealth and RPM help St. Johns to overcome the healthcare disparities

St. John's Well Child and Family Center in LA completes its 93000 telehealth visits while serving more than 56000 patients.

Initially, St. John’s Well Child and Family Center in Los Angeles opted for providing the resources on a large scale for the COVID-19 testing. It is quite clear that this service area of South LA and Compton is going to be significant and higher at risk for COVID-19 infection. Also, there are risks of the complication than the other areas in LA County.

The region has a dense population. It is having a higher level of poverty and a large scale immigrant population. The population is experiencing a higher rate of diabetes, hypertension, a heart condition, and other behavioral health issues.

Jim Manga, President, and CEO of St. John’s Well Child & Family Center, says the adoption of new technology in the community members is serving slowly. This is due to the lack of literacy level among the older patients.

The pandemic situation is accelerating towards the implementation of the Telehealth for the St. John’s Well Child and Family Center. This is due to the “safer at home” order from the government and to meet the need for healthcare for local residents. The reimbursement of the telehealth service is also working as a matter of concern.

The Federal Government did not issue any kind of guidance at the initial stage of the pandemic. However, Manga is hopeful for the maintenance of the policy by the government.

The proposed project came with the establishment of a robust telehealth and RPM system. It is both the care service for the COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 related services. While conducting the assessment for the existing I.T. infrastructure, the staff went for identifying the gaps that deserve addressing.

There are various vendors of telemedicine technology and services. While meeting the challenge to implement Telehealth, St. John’s opted for redesigning the patient visit workflow. As a result, it has enabled 10000 of South L. A and Compton Residents to receive the COVID-19 related care.
